this morning i have just done some room-cleaning and i need to announce that i no longer have a Dumping Box! in other words, have dumped my Dumping Box. which, as its name implies, was a cardboard box in which i dumped everything that i thought i might want to keep but never actually needed and then i left it in a corner to collect dust. things like pretty paper bags that held gifts, random things that people gave me, and other things that i have no idea why i kept. i found some curious things though, like this CD of 20 tracks that i am now listening to and trying to figure out where in the world i got it from. it has the strangest mix of songs. HAHA I HAVE REACHED THE LAST TRACK AND IT IS THE RJC SCHOOL SONG HAHAHA WHAT CD IS THIS AND WHY DO I HAVE IT?? okay, at least now i know why it was in the dumping box and i don't have to feel bad that somebody gave me a CD that i totally ignored.

the hospital is a pretty depressing place. from the guy in the next bed who shouts in his sleep and also at other times of the day but nobody can understand what he's trying to say, to the guy in the opposite bed who does nothing but stare at the ceiling when he is not asleep. and the senile old man who thinks he is in the supermarket and wants to go to the hospital. if i was an old man with one leg in a strange place and i couldn't communicate intelligibly and people kept poking me with needles or talking to me condescendingly i think i would be quite frustrated. the more i think about how these people must be feeling the more scary it is. but then again there are the nurses who are always bouncing around and talking cheerfully like the hospital is the most happy place in the world and there is nowhere they would rather be. which would probably be unnatural and annoying in another place but is strangely welcome in a hospital ward.

it's been a long two weeks and i am running on auto mode. an infection like this was always just something that happened to other random people, not to people i know, and much less to someone close to me. i am glad, though, that my brother seems to be on Recovery Road and everything is not so red alert for now. he is as of now the longest staying patient in his ward and looks to be there for a couple more weeks. but he is also probably the most popular patient, because everyone wants to visit him, cook meals for him and give him fruits. i must have at least ten bottles of chicken essence, five bottles of birds' nest and countless more packs of apples, oranges and grapes at home which people gave to him but he didn't eat. but more than the physical stuff that people gave, it is really their encouragement and prayers that i am really thankful for. it really struck me to see how many people are praying hard for his recovery and it is crystal clear to me that this is what is making a difference.

okay, there were not six huge needles this time. there was only one. and it didn't even look like a needle so i didn't realise i was getting an injection until i felt the little sting. unfortunately my gums seem to have some sort of resistance to anaesthetic and so the injection had to be done twice, and then one more time halfway through the operation because it started wearing off.
but the worst part was, it took ONE AND A HALF HOURS. i cannot begin to describe how traumatic it is to lie in the uncomfortable chair for ninety minutes while the dentist progresses from little tweezers to asking for drills and pliers and shakes his head after each try because the tooth refuses to come out no matter how hard he pulls at it. not to mention the part when it slowly dawned upon me that even if it took ninety hours i would still have to sit through it. oh well but anyway it's only traumatic when you're stuck in it right, so now it's all okay. except that i get hungry every 3 hours or so because macaroni, porridge and mashed potato are not the most filling of delicacies.
the sad part is that i didn't even get to keep the tooth like the last time, because it was in a million pieces and the dentist was probably too tired to glue them all together for me.

this morning, having decided that it is about time to begin excavation on my second wisdom tooth, i dialed the number to my dentist. of course we all know which dentist it is, the one who is pretty good although he tends to forget about my existence and move office without telling me. but at least the last time he moved he kept the phone number the same. because this time The Number You Have Dialed Is Not In Use. so okay, i called the school dentist instead. which sounds like a good alternative because it means that i won't have to trudge down orchard road with a numb and swollen face like the last time. anyway the point is, now i am feeling rather scared. it was the six anaesthetic injections with the huge needles that hurt the most the last time; i wonder if it will be the same.
